主要从事物理学、电子科学与技术等专业的教学及光学、光电子等领域的科研工作。主持完成国家自然科学基金重点项目、国家重大科技专项、国家“973计划”、国家“863计划”等重点科研项目或课题10余项。在国内外学术刊物发表论文400余篇,被引用超过21000次,2019-2023年连续5年入选科睿唯安“全球高被引科学家”。培养博士研究生40余名、硕士研究生80余名。
目前担任教育部高等学校电子信息类专业教学指导委员会委员、湖南省高等学校电子信息类专业教学指导委员会主任委员、湖南省物理学会理事长。
